Which Van Size Do You Need? A Guide to Our Fleet

18 April 2025

Back to news

Booking the right size van makes the difference between a job that goes smoothly and one that does not. This guide covers every vehicle we offer at Laser Van Rentals, what each one is designed for, and what you need to drive it.

Small Van

The most practical choice for lighter jobs. A small van handles much like a large car, fits into a normal parking space and is comfortable to drive if you have not hired a van before.

Good for: - Tip runs and household clearances - Collecting furniture or white goods - Moving a studio flat or a single room - Tools and equipment for a day job - Local deliveries in and around Watford

Step up to a Transit if you have large furniture or more than a room or two to move.

Transit Van (Standard Wheelbase)

The Transit is the most commonly hired van in our fleet for good reason. It handles the majority of everyday jobs well and is straightforward to drive on a standard car licence.

Good for: - Moving a one or two bedroom flat - Furniture and appliance collections and deliveries - Trade and contractor work - Garden clearances and bulky rubbish - Catering and event supplies

Transit Long Wheelbase

The long wheelbase adds useful extra length to the load area. If you have anything that is too long for a standard Transit, including bed frames, wardrobes, timber or ladders, the LWB is the one to book.

Good for: - Larger flat moves or smaller house moves - Longer items that need to lie flat - Trade deliveries where floor length is the limiting factor - Customers wanting to get the job done in a single trip

Transit Extra Long Wheelbase

The largest panel van in the fleet. Maximum load space on a standard car licence. If you need as much van as possible before stepping up to a Luton, this is it.

Good for: - Bigger house moves - Large commercial deliveries - Jobs where the standard Transit LWB would still mean a second trip

Luton Van with Tail Lift

The Luton gives you a larger enclosed load area than any panel van in the fleet. The tail lift is the key feature here: it lets you load and unload heavy or bulky items at ground level without lifting them up onto the van floor. If you are doing a house move or shifting heavy furniture, this makes a real practical difference.

Good for: - House moves of three bedrooms or more - Heavy furniture including sofas, beds and white goods - Commercial deliveries of bulky goods - Situations where safe loading without heavy lifting matters

Our Luton vans are under 3.5 tonnes gross weight, so you can drive them on a standard car licence.

7.5 Tonne Lorry

The largest vehicle we offer and designed for the biggest jobs. Significantly more capacity than a Luton van, with a full lorry body for large house moves or substantial commercial work.

Important: A Category C licence is required to drive a 7.5 tonne lorry. If you obtained your car driving licence after 1 January 1997, this entitlement is not included automatically. Check the entitlements on your photocard before booking.

Good for: - Large full house moves - High volume commercial and trade deliveries - Jobs where a Luton would require multiple trips
