When you book a van with Laser Van Rentals, one of the things we ask for before you drive away is a DVLA check code. It is a simple step but an important one, and this guide explains exactly how to get it done.
What is a check code and why do we need it?
The DVLA check code is generated through the government’s own website and gives hire companies a temporary view of your driving licence record. It shows us your licence categories, endorsements and penalty points without you having to hand over your physical licence or any copies of it.
Our insurance requires us to verify every driver’s licence before a hire begins. The check code is the quickest and most secure way to do that.
The code is valid for 21 days and has a limited number of uses. We only use it once, at the point of collection, and we do not retain the code afterwards.
What you need before you start
Have the following ready:
- Your photocard driving licence number (printed on the front of the card)
- Your National Insurance number
- The postcode on your DVLA record
That last point is worth paying attention to. If you have moved since you last updated your driving licence, the postcode you enter must be the one the DVLA holds, not your current address. Using your current postcode when your licence record shows a different one is the most common reason the site rejects people’s details.
Step by step
1. Open www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence on any device.
2. Enter your driving licence number, National Insurance number and postcode.
3. Once your identity is confirmed, you will see a summary of your driving record.
4. Choose the option to share your licence information.
5. A check code will be displayed. Screenshot it or write it down, and bring it with you when you collect your van.
The whole process usually takes under five minutes.
When should I generate it?
You can generate the code anytime in the 21 days before your hire. There is no need to do it the moment you book. A day or so before collection works well, so you have it fresh and ready to go.
Problems with the website
If the site is not accepting your details, check the postcode first. If you have moved recently, try the postcode from your previous address. If you still cannot get through, call us before your hire date and we will help you sort it out.
You can reach us at our Watford depots on 01923 711 117.
Non-UK licences
The DVLA check code system is only available for UK issued licences. If your licence was issued abroad, please call us ahead of your hire date so we can confirm what documents you will need to bring.
